Discover the hidden gems of the UNESCO Heritage Site of Stone Town From the Proximity of Tembo
The Old Stone Town is a World Heritage declared by UNESCO in more than a decade now. Discover and tour the main City market, which opened in 1904, to obtain a full picture of Stone Town’s architecture, including its sand and stone antique built buildings with Arab/Indian carved doors with brass studs and carved balconies.
Along the twisting lanes of Stone Town, former palaces and Arab mansions (Sultan’s Palace Museum, House of Wonders also known as Beit-el-ajaib built in 1886) hint at a grander age for this port city on Zanzibar’s western coast. The old fort, which was built to fend off the Portuguese in the 1700s, today serves as a venue for local performances, a café, and an art gallery. The Anglican Cathedral of Christ, of course, is a must-see which was built by bishop steers in 1873 on the site of the old slave market.
